The naval town of Portsmouth has had two greyhound tracks in the past, the first being in Copnor between Walsall Road and Tamworth Road, and situated at 1° 3' W 50° 48' N. It opened for racing on 30th June 1928 and operated as an independent track. It held its final meeting at this venue on 29th November 1930 in preparation for being relocated to its new home on Target Road. The new track opened at Target Road on the 25th May 1931. Traditional racing nights were Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and the races were run over distances from a 265 metre sprint to a 792 metre marathon. |
||||||
The principal races at the stadium were the Cloth of Gold over 438 metres and the fascinating Walstone Dual Distance Trophy run over both 610 metres and 438 metres. | ||||||
I am grateful to Jon Seddon for the following link to a map showing the whereabouts of the old track |

This section gives a comprehensive picture of
the badges produced by the track throughout the ages, but only provides the briefest of
glimpses of its history. For those wishing to undertake further research we can recommend
a visit to http://astore.amazon.co.uk/wwwgreyhoundd-21 where further reading can be undertaken. |
